The knowledge network

Projects awarded by year of decision, by the OECD area each declares. A year with fewer projects is a year with fewer competitions decided, not less research.

One dot per Fondecyt study group — the panel each project competes in — sized by its awarded projects and coloured by its area. Two groups are joined when the institutions specialised in one tend to be specialised in the other too: the proximity of the «product space» of Hidalgo, Klinger, Barabási and Hausmann (2007), the same PuroChile publishes for the economy, computed over the 39 institutions with 40 or more projects. The lines are the tree joining every group by its strongest link, plus every pair at 0.5 or closer. The axes mean nothing: what the figure says is near and far.

Each dot is an institution, sized by its Fondecyt projects, near the ones that research a similar mix of study groups and joined to its two closest. Affinity compares the two mixes: 100 is the same, 0 nothing in common. It is similarity of agenda, not collaboration: ANID publishes only the principal institution of each project. Universities with at least one project awarded as principal institution in 2015–2024, from most to fewest. Specialisation and affinity are computed only with 40 Fondecyt projects or more: below that, a share hangs on a couple of competitions.

A numbered group («Biology 1») is described by what its own projects declare: its most frequent OECD disciplines in the window, counted. Groups ANID split or renamed inside the window are read as the group they came from: astronomy and education in 2020, chemistry and psychology before.

• Projects ANID (CONICYT until 2019) awarded with the institution as principal: the one that answers for the project. A project with partners counts once. Research paid by the institution itself, by CORFO outside ANID or from abroad is not here.
• Amounts are not added: the register carries them in thousands of pesos of each year since 1982 — and some in euros — and adding them would be a figure with no unit.
• Institutions are matched to the SIES by name, with an explicit table for ANID's other spellings. Foundations, centres and faculties with a legal personality of their own are separate institutions. 3,224 projects of 2006–2025 sit under 1,413 names that are not SIES institutions (INIA, CECS, CEAZA, foundations, companies and foreign universities, among others).
• The register's keywords are not used: their separators were lost on publication, and cutting them again would be guessing.
• Specialisation, the network and affinity are arithmetic on counts, with an author: not a forecast, they fill no gap and feed no indicator.
