Universities
160,679 people started an undergraduate programme at one of Chile's 50 universities in 2026. Twenty years of who grew, who fell, who opened and who closed, and what they teach.

2007–2026Which institutions grew and which fell
46Only institutions that still enrolled first-years in 2026 and averaged at least 300 entrants a year in both windows: a percentage change on a small base is noise with a large number on top. Those that opened later are not here — growing from nothing has no percentage — and neither are those that closed; both are listed further down.

Who opened and who closed
2007–2026Opening is the first year with first-year entrants after 2007; the register starts in 2007, so an institution already enrolling then may be much older. Closing is the last year with first-year entrants: an institution that stops admitting keeps teaching the students it has, and one absorbed by another is marked as such.

Which programmes grew and which fell
47Inside universities only: the same programme taught at a university and at an institute is two intakes that share a name. Read over SIES's generic programme, not over the name each institution registered, and only programmes averaging at least 500 entrants a year in both windows. The programmes with a series cover between 94% and 97% of each year.

From undergraduate to postgraduate
2024–2026Everyone who started a master's or a doctorate in Chile in these years, followed back by the masked student id to the institution of their last undergraduate title. Left, where they graduated; right, where they went on. A coloured ribbon is someone who stayed at the institution they graduated from; a grey one, someone who moved. Only the 15 largest institutions on each side are named; the rest are added into «other institutions» — the widest ribbon is other institutions to other institutions, which is how spread out postgraduate study is beyond the large universities — and «no title in the register» is people who graduated before 2007 or abroad, not people without a degree.

Mineduc's higher-education register (SIES): first-year undergraduates, one row per person who started that year. Institution names are the register's own and are written as it writes them. Universities, institutes and CFTs.
